He was born in Augusta County Dec. 12, 1877, and lived in Waynesboro until 1935 when he moved to near Afton where he was proprietor of a service station on the Lynchburg road. He is survived by his widow, Yhorlia Barker Childress; three daughters, Mrs. Virginia C. Stone, Waynesboro; and Mrs. Floyd W. Gray and Mrs. Marguerite C. Brown, both of Afton; one son, Carl S. Childress of Afton; and two brothers, Patrick H. Childress, of Waynesboro and A. D. Childress, of Hagerstown, Md. Also six grandchildren, Mrs. Thomas A. Halter, Miss Alice Gray, Miss Jo Anne Gray, Donnie Gray, and Carl Allen Brown, all of Afton, and Woodrow W. Stone, of Waynesboro; and one great-grandchild, Charles Stone, of Waynesboro. Pallbearers will be Henry Pannell, Earl Barker, Solon Barker, Austin Pannell, Preston Barker and Walker Barker. Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of the Etter Funeral Home, under the direction of Rev. B. F. Robinson. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery.

DEATH OF MRS. BYRD

Mrs. Mary E. Byrd, wife of Robert Byrd, died at her home, on the Ellison Farm, Saturday last, about noon. She had been ill about a month with an affection of the heart and some other ailments. She is survived by her husband, three daughters, and two sons, also by her father, Mr. David Childress. The funeral was held at the home on Monday evening, conducted by Rev. Stanley and Rev. Lynch, and interment in Riverview.

Mrs. Childress is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law; Jim Childress and wife Kathy of Afton, John Childress and wife Terrie of Bridgewater, Carl Jeffrey Childress and wife Tammy of Fishersville, a sister, Christine Strickler of Waynesboro, two granddaughters, Karla Childress of Manchester, Tennessee and Kristin Childress of Abilene, Texas.
Mrs. Childress was an active member of the Waynesboro Church of Christ for over forty years where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Ladie's Group, and assisted with Vacation Bible School.
She was a resident at the Shenandoah Nursing Home for the past four years where she made many friends and touched many lives.

A funeral service for Lester Lee Painter, 62, of Richmond, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Waynesboro Church of the Brethren, conducted by the Rev. Wendell Flory, assisted by Robert Ponchot. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
Mr. Painter died at 9:55 p.m. Monday at his home.
He was born July 5, 1905, at Staunton, a son of the late Jacob and Nealie Greaver Painter.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ethel Campbell Painter; three sons, Lester L. Painter of Quantico, Robert L. Painter of Brooklyn, N. Y. and James L. Painter of Roanoke; one daughter, Mrs. Richard Shae of Falls Church; three brothers, Harry H. Painter of Washington, D. C., and Charley Painter and Herbert Painter, both of Staunton; one sister, Mrs. Hensley Wiseman of Staunton; also three step-sons, three step-daughters, 11 grandchildren, 18 step-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

430. Obituary, Richard Lee Maupin. Richard Lee Maupin passed away to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday March 8, 2008, at his residence in Waynesboro, Virginia, with his family at his side.

Richard, known as "Lee" to his family and "Dick" to his friends, was born on June 25, 1920, in Waynesboro, to the late Alfred Lee Maupin and Lacy Hoover Maupin.

Dick was a member of the Shenandoah Heights Baptist Church. He was a member of the Waynesboro Moose Lodge and a volunteer at the Rockfish Gap Tourist Information Center from 1986 until 2006. He was a member and PastCommander of the Waynesboro VFW Post #2424 and a member of American Legion Post #340. Dick's legacy will be that he never met a stranger and loved to chat with everyone. Dick was a real people person.

Dick was a veteran of World War II. He enlisted and served with the 7lst Infantry Division of the United States Army. His unit marched and fought from LeHarve, France to the most easternpoint reached by American general forces of any United States army in the European Theater at the river Enns in Steyr, Austria.

After graduation from Waynesboro High School in 1939, he went to work for the N & W Railroad until entering the military. After the war he returned to Waynesboro to work for DuPont in Waynesboro until transferring to Camden, South Carolina, as a supervisor to help with the Camden plant start-up. He returned to the Waynesboro plant where he worked until his retirement in 1978.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother-in law, William Thomasson.

Dick is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann Maupin; two daughters, Patricia Maupin Snyder and her husband, David Snyder, of Waynesboro, and Loretta Maupin Harris and her husband, Ronald (Poochie) Harris, of Dalton, Georgia; two stepdaughters, Linda Sharon Robertson and her husband, Robby, of Harrisonburg, and Teresa Williams Ritter and her husband, William, of Leesburg; three granddaughters, Jacquelyn Hagwood Marshall of Waynesboro, Angela Harris of Smyrna, Georgia, Shana Harris Masengill and her husband, Robert, of Sarosota, Florida; a grandson, Troy Richard Hagwood of Vesuvius; step-grandchildren, Ada Ann and Woodrow Ritter of Leesburg; two great-grandsons; four great-granddaughters; one great-great-granddaughter; a brother, Robert Wesley Maupin and his wife, Carol, of Moneta, South Carolina; and a sister, Ann Maupin Thomasson of Aiken, South Carolina. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and very special friends, Melvin and Marilou Redmond, and Allen and Debbie Todd.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at Shenandoah Heights Baptist Church, by Pastor Paul F. LaPrevotte. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at Riverview Cemetery, with military honors by American Legion Post #340.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2008, at McDow Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers will be Dick's grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Waynesboro VFW Post #2424 and American Legion Post #340.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shenandoah Heights Baptist Church, New Window Fund, 901 Shenandoah Ave., Waynesboro, VA 22980.

Alexandra was preceded in death by her grandfather, Douglas Cary Jackson; great -grandparents, Belle S. Brown, Harry J. Brown, Estelle Faulkner and William C. Faulkner.

Alexandra graduated from J.T. Henley Middle School this spring and was an avid soccer fan.

Robert Mason Brown, III, 40, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 7, 2019 at home. Mason grew up in Roanoke, VA and graduated from North Cross School. He played football in high school and at Hampden- Sydney College where he proudly wore the # 41. He was a personal trainer at the YMCA and was loved by his many clients. He was always generous of himself and never met a stranger. Mason's smile was infectious and he was often described as a kind soul. He was an avid Redskin fan and a member of St Andrews Episcopal Church.

Mason was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Samuel Edmund Waddill, Jr., and Robert Brown, Sr. and his grandmother, Betty Jane Brown.He is survived by his mother, Anne Waddill Brown and his father, Robert Mason "Buster" Brown, Jr. both of Newport News; his grandmother, Mary Randolph Scott Waddill of Newport News; his best buddy, his german shepherd, Rommel and many extended family and friends.

A Memorial Service Celebrating Mason's life will be held on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at 1:00p.m. at St Andrew's Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends following the service.
