In Memory of Our Best Friend

"Smokey"

September 1983-July 3, 1997

Smokey was half German Shepherd and half Golden Retriever, but there was no half for his love of his family and friends. He loved cook outs and get togethers. He just loved people.

We found him as a 2-3 month old puppy someone had dropped off and came wandering into a friends garage. My daughter, Becky, heard him whimpering and went out to find him. It was the usual "Can we keep him?" rountine, where the canned answer is "Well ok, until the owner shows up." Here we are some 14 years later and the "owner" finally showed up.

Today Smokey is able to run again, free spirited as he used to be and happy to be with his new friends. You see, I had to put Smokey down. He had crippling arthritis in his hips and back and could not walk alone.

He couldn't do many of the things he used to love to do. Sit on the back deck in the morning and howl at his friends, bark at the mail man as he delivered the mail in the afternoon, lay out in the front grass watching the world go by and sit by the grill in the evening, waiting for his special hamburger, mommy made, to go on. Smokey loved his mommy. The two of them could put away some ice cream. Whatever mommy got Smokey got and he got plenty of snacks. Mommy saw to that. That's what he loved to do.

Smokey also loved Christmas, he got lots of good treats and the tree afterwards. Oh yeah, and ride in the back of my old pick-up. He really loved that. Smokey used to get away sometimes when I would forget to close the side gate. He would run through the neighborhood and leave his mark on every tree. You couldn't catch him, not then. All I would have to do is let the tail gate down and start the engine of that old truck and Smokey would be ready to jump in and go for a ride, even if it was just back to the house.

Smokey took his last ride in that old truck. In the front seat, not his usual place in the back.

Good Bye Little Buddy!

You are Greatly Missed!
