My Mothers Father was Alonzo Sprouse. My Grandfather married
Hester Coleman. My Mother Bernice
Sprouse was born in Goochland, Va.
My Aunt who is 92 is the only living surviver of 11 children of Alonzo Sprouse. I have many cousins we live throughout Va, and MD. My Grandfather passed away early in my mothers life. Which left my Grandmother alone to raise the children. Most of my uncles joined the military to send their mother money to help provide for the younger children. My uncle was killed in The Korean War his name is in DC Korean Memorial. His name Also can be found on a wall in the chapel in Richmond Hospital.
My Mother and my Aunts left home at an early age my mother only 12 yrs of age. Left also following her sisters and brothers to Baltimore,MD. They were able to falselafy their ages in Maryland to find gainful employment. Which they then also were able to send money back home to my Grandmother then living in Richmond, Va. I was born in Baltimore, MD. Also many of my cousins. My uncle Harry Sprouse to my knowledge was the only male able to have children. Which keeps the Surname alive.I don't know the reason why he was the only one able to other then Uncle Thomas C. Spouse was killed in Korea. Uncle Harry Sprouse also served in Korea. He sadly was first notified of Uncle Carters death as they were just a hill apart in Korea. Uncle Carter was a scout and killed on a late evening before a holiday. Uncle Harry had received permission from his upper command to see his brother the following holiday. When he arrived at my Uncles Battalion he was notified when he asked where he could find his brother that he had been killed the evening before a missile had exploded in his back as he was scouting ahead. He died crawling on his belly on a muddy battlefield in Korea. We have his bible that was in his breast pocket

nephew is proudly named after Uncle Carter and shares his same middle name. We never met our Uncle Thomas C. Spouse.
But our Family is very proud and honored. That our bloodline is direct decindent to be a Family that in War time . That gave all they had even if it meant their LIFES.

Goochland and Abermale was the key. Some will have us from Richmond. Your research has us directly where we start-up. Richmond is an after my Grandfathers Death. As I stated then is when the family started moving in search of work. After their Mansion had burned down.
My Grandmother and the children were displaced. My knowledge is verbally from my mother who was the second to the youngest. Alonzo Spouse Jr my uncle who passed in the late 80's no surviving children.
Maintained his residency til the day he passed in Richmond, Va. My Grandmother then lived in Varina County, Va. On many acres of land backed up to The Richmond Battlefields which as a young child I spent many days playing and exploring. Which in turn to this day has influenced me and kept my love of History Alive.

Born May 20, 1923, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland Sprouse and Ruth Caroline Mitchell Sprouse.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Morton P. Rose; two sisters, Elsie S. Wiest and Betty Ann Morris; and three brothers, Thomas Elmer Sprouse, James Clarence Sprouse, and Samuel Stuart Sprouse.

A graduate of Midway High School and a member of First Baptist Church, she retired from F. S. T. C. after 25 years of service.

Surviving her are a sister, Barbara S. Powell and her husband, Herbert, of Charlottesville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, April 3, 2006, at the Hebrew Cemetery with the Rev. Sidney E. Craig officiating.

The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 2200 Old Ivy Road, Suite 2, Charlottesville, VA 22903.

Rosabelle Sprouse Brown, 89, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at the Martha Jefferson House Infirmary.
She was born Nov. 22, 1912, in Charlottesville, to the late Rebecca Childress Sprouse and James Howell Sprouse. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harry, and a sister, Helen S. Pond.
Mrs. Brown was married to Harry Jordan Brown Aug. 28, 1932, and was blessed with two children.
She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Sandra Brown Burke; a son, Harry Jordan Brown Jr. and his wife, Teresa; four grandchildren, Lucius Alexander Brown and his wife, Theresa, Jordan A. Jackson, Sandra Jackson Motley, and Rosemary Jackson Summers and her husband, Paul; seven great-grandchildren, Alexandra Read Brown, Wilson Jordan Brown, Rosemary Jackson Motley, Caroline Camp Motley, J. Coleman motley III, Jordan Alabama Summers, and Alexandra Douglas Summers; a sister, Irma S. Stevens and her husband, Lewis Benton; a brother, James Howell Sprouse Jr.; and three nephews and their families.
Belle loved all sports, but especially the game of golf. She was an avid duplicate bridge player.
She was a past member of the Keswick Country Club, Farmington Country Club, and Keswick Hunt Club. She was a member of the Doe Club and the First United Methodist Church.
A loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, "Nanny" will be greatly missed by all her family.
Her family would like to thank the staff of Our Lady Peace for their many years of help and assistance. A special thanks to the Martha Jefferson House Infirmary and its wonderful staff. Their kindness and compassion will always be remembered.
A graveside service will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Riverview Cemetery.

James H. Sprouse Jr.

James Howell Sprouse Jr., 83, of Keswick, died Friday, June 3, 2005, in his residence.

He was born Nov. 8, 1921, in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late James H. Sprouse and Rebecca Childress Sprouse.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Eloise E. Sprouse, and two sisters, and their husbands, Helen Pond and her husband, Harry, and Rosabelle Brown and her husband, Harry.

James was a retired carrier for the United States Postal Service with 28 years of service; retired from the University of Virginia Athletic Department as equipment manager after 10 years, a member of the Elks, an Air Force veteran of World War II, an avid golfer, and a member of Hinton Avenue United Methodist Church.

He is survived by a son, James Howell Sprouse III and his wife, Cindy, of Bluffton, S.C.; a sister, Irma Stevens and her husband, Lewis, of Charlottesville; three grandchildren, Jenifer L. Davis and her husband, Jason, of Gordonsville, Amy E. Simpkins and her husband, Scott, of Charlottesville, and Kyle A. Sprouse of Bluffton, S.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Seth C. Dalton and Nicholas J. Davis.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, 2005, in the Riverview Cemetery with the Rev. Sidney Craig officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 6, 2005, at Hill & Wood Funeral Home.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 2200 Old Ivy Road, Suite 2, Charlottesville, VA 22903.

I have a very distinct recollection of the John Sprouce who served with me in Capt. T.T. Estes' Company- He was cook for my mess the whole time I was in service- He may have been drafted in Capt. Rothwell's Company and immediately after arriving in camp transferred along with others into that of Capt. Estes- We were stationed most of the time at Camp Carter, and our company formed part a attachment sent to Hobb's Hole (Rappahanock) in pursuit of the enemy- We were never at Norfolk never in an engagement none of our company were ever wounded nor did I ever hear of Mr. Sprouce speak of having served at Norfolk- tho this he may have done & I have forgotten it. The Sprouse family are very numerous in this county- and the one applying to you may not be the one with whom I served- At home he lived in Capt. Rothwell's Malitia bounds (I mean my acquaintance). He still lives in the same neighborhood, is a man of some property, and has no connection or intercourse with those of his name who reside mostly in which is termed the Ragged Mountains and are very degraded- You may rely fully upon any thing that my friend John Sprouce may say- I saw him about 18 months ago and if I am not mistaken he informed me that (con't)

his claim for bounty land was in the hands of (I think) Drury Wood a lawyer in Charlottesville and I promised him if he should find it necessary to render him any gratuitous aid in my power- He never had called on me , and I know that there would not and ought not to be least difficulty in establishing his claim. He resides on top of the South West Mountains (normally called Little Mountains) near Stony Point- It is impossible for me at this time after the lapse of so many years to remember the names of all the Captains from Albemarle. I was but a boy at the time and served as a volunteer- I will name some of them, Estes, Rothwell, McCullock, Wm Woods, T. (W.[sp] Wood) Carr, Field- What part of the County does your man live in? I remember Thomas, Rippew[sp], Dike, Snow and Gardner as members of our Company- If it is really my friend you have got hold of he ought by all means he get his land.

This indenture made this 26^th day of February 1820 between JOHN SPROUSE and BETSEY his wife of the one part WILLIAM BROADHEAD of the second part and JAMES TRAVILLIAM of the third part all parties being of the County of Albemarle, witnesseth that the above married JOHN SPROUSE being justly indebted to the said William Broadhead the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars, as per said Sprouses bonds to said Broadhead will more fully appear the one due the 1^st day of December 1820 for seventy five dollars, the other for the like sum of seventy five dollars and due the 1^st day of December 1821 and desirous of securing the punctual payments of said bonds to said Broadhead as they respectively become due for and in consideration of which and in the further consideration of one dollar paid by the said James Travelliou the receipt of which is here, acknowledge by the said John Sprouse and wife they the John Sprouse and Betsey. I wife do by these presents sell and convey unto the said James Travillion his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Albemarle on the South West Mountain adjourning the lands or which Mrs. Elizabeth Fitch and Mrs. Mary Carver and John Carver and others now reside supposed to contain thirty acres be the source more or less, it being the one half of the tract of land whereon the late Cornelius Carver deceased resided and died in the County of Albemarle, and which land are the lots which were drawn by the John Carver and by him exchanges with said Sprouse and by Broadhead on the diversion of said Cornelius Carvers land a part of which say this day conveys by said Broadhead and wife to said Sprouse by their deed of conveyance and bearing equal date with these presents with all and ever after appurtenances to the same belonging which the said Sprouse and wife, doth by these presents warrant and will forever defend a good and sufficient to, to the said James Travillion his heirs and assigns forever against the claim or claims of all and every person or persons whosoever nevertheless and it is here declared to be the true interest and meaning of this trust that if the above married John Sprouse do and shall well and truly pay or cause to be paid to the said William Broadhead his heirs executors administrators or assigns the aforesaid bonds as they respectively become due with all the interest on the same, together with the costs of drawing recording and securing this indenture; there with ease this indenture to be well and void, but in default said Sprouse on his part to pay all any part of said bonds and interest and cost aforesaid there the said James Travillion his heirs executors administrators or assigns is hereby authorized and secured to advertise for one month in the Central Gazette in the town of Charlottesville or source other newspaper in Richmond or Stantown the time and place of selling all or any part of the above conveyed bond for ready money and from the sales of said land to pay and satisfy the costs of executing this trust deed and then to pay said William Broadhead his heirs executors administrators or assigns the aforesaid with all the interest due on the same, and the over plus of said sale if any to pay or to said John Sprouse his heirs executors administrators or assigns. 1820 - DEED - Albemarle County, Virginia
This indenture made this 26^th day of February 1820 between JOHN SPROUSE and BETSEY his wife of the one part WILLIAM BROADHEAD of the second part and JAMES TRAVILLIAM of the third part all parties being of the County of Albemarle, witnesseth that the above married JOHN SPROUSE being justly indebted to the said William Broadhead the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars, as per said Sprouses bonds to said Broadhead will more fully appear the one due the 1^st day of December 1820 for seventy five dollars, the other for the like sum of seventy five dollars and due the 1^st day of December 1821 and desirous of securing the punctual payments of said bonds to said Broadhead as they respectively become due for and in consideration of which and in the further consideration of one dollar paid by the said James Travelliou the receipt of which is here, acknowledge by the said John Sprouse and wife they the John Sprouse and Betsey. I wife do by these presents sell and convey unto the said James Travillion his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Albemarle on the South West Mountain adjourning the lands or which Mrs. Elizabeth Fetch and Mrs. Mary Carver and John Carver and others now reside supposed to contain thirty acres be the source more or less, it being the one half of the tract of land whereon the late Cornelius Carver deceased resided and died in the County of Albemarle, and which land are the lots which were drawn by the John Carver and by him exchanges with said Sprouse and by Broadhead on the diversion of said Cornelius Carvers land a part of which say this day conveys by said Broadhead and wife to said Sprouse by their deed of conveyance and bearing equal date with these presents with all and ever after appurtenances to the same belonging which the said Sprouse and wife, doth by these presents warrant and will forever defend a good and sufficient to, to the said James Travillion his heirs and assigns forever against the claim or claims of all and every person or persons whosoever nevertheless and it is here declared to be the true interest and meaning of this trust that if the above married John Sprouse do and shall well and truly pay or cause to be paid to the said William Broadhead his heirs executors administrators or assigns the aforesaid bonds as they respectively become due with all the interest on the same, together with the costs of drawing recording and securing this indenture; there with ease this indenture to be well and void, but in default said Sprouse on his part to pay all any part of said bonds and interest and cost aforesaid there the said James Travillion his heirs executors administrators or assigns is hereby authorized and secured to advertise for one month in the Central Gazette in the town of Charlottesville or source other newspaper in Richmond or Stantown the time and place of selling all or any part of the above conveyed bond for ready money and from the sales of said land to pay and satisfy the costs of executing this trust deed and then to pay said William Broadhead his heirs executors administrators or assigns the aforesaid with all the interest due on the same, and the over plus of said sale if any to pay or to said John Sprouse his heirs executors administrators or assigns. In testimony of all which to parties to this deed of first have hereunto set then hands and seals the day and year first herein written.

We Dabney Minor and Frank Carr Justices of the peace in the County of Albemarle do here certify that Betsy J. the wife John Sprouse parties to a certain deed ___________________. Bearing date the 26 day of February 1820 and hereunto annexed personally appeared before us in our County a foresaid and having the deed aforesaid fully explained to her she acknowledged the same to be her act as deed and declared that she had willingly signed sealed and delivered the same said that she wished not to retract it. Given under our hands and seals this 26^th day of February 1820.

This deed of trust was produced to me in said office and certified, have been acknowledge by John Sprouse and William Broadhead acknowledge by James Travillion and thereupon the same together with the certified of relinquishment of dower of Mrs. Betsy J. wife of John Sprouse was admitted to record.

This indenture made this 22^nd day of July in the year of our lord 1841 between JOHN SPROUCE, SR. of the first part and WILLIAM BROADHEAD and JAMES BROADHEAD (son) of the second part and HENRY BROADHEAD of the third part. Whereas the said Jno. Sprouce Sr. is justly indebted to the said FLEMNING BROADHEAD in the sum of one hundred eighty five dollars and forty four dollars being due in the 1^st November 1839 - seventy dollars and fifty cents being due on the 1^st November 1840, and the balance seventy dollars and fifty cents being due to be paid on the 1^st November next ensuring with the legal interest thereon accruing when debt with said interest, the said John Sprouce Sr. is willing and desirous to secure. Now the indenture witnesseth, that for and inconsideration of the prencised __, the said Jno Sprouce Sr. herewith given granted, bargained, sold, and, confirmed, and by these presents doth given grant, bargain, sell, and confirm to the said Wm. Broadhead and James Broadhead their heirs, and assigns, forever, all his beds and bedding and all his household and kitchen furniture whatsoever to him belonging also, my present crop of wheat, corn, and tobacco, one yoke of oxen two cows and one calf and two yearlings, and fourteen male pigs, together with the female portion of stock mentioned. To have and to hold the said property here granted and untended to be granted unto the said William and James Broadhead their heirs, executors, administrations, and assigns forever, and the said John Sprouce, Sr. for himself his heirs executors and administrators, doth hereby covennent , give and promise to and with the said Wm. & James Broadhead their heirs executors and administrators and assigns forever in manner an form following, that is to say, the said John Sprouce, Sr. wish executors administrators, the property herein conveyed, unto the said Wm. & James Broadhead their heirs executors administrators and assigns against all persons whatsoever shall and will warrant and forever defend by these presents, upon trust nevertheless that the said William and James Broadhead (trustees) their heirs executors and administrators shall permit the said Jno. Sprouce, Sr. remain in quiet and peaceable possession of the said property hereto conveyed, and take the property thereof to his own use until default be made in the payment of the said sum of one hundred and eighty five dollars other in the whole or part, and their upon this further event, that they or any of them or either of them or the survivor of them or the heirs, executors, administrators or assigns of such survivor, shall and will so soon after the happening of such default of payment, as they or any or either of them, or the survivor of them, or the heirs executors, administrators and assigns of such survivor may think proper or the said Flemming Broadhead, his executors, administrators or assigns shall request, sell the property hereby conveyed o such part of the hereby granted promised as the trustee or trustees or their representatives hereby authorized to act shall think sufficient for the purpose, and shall think proper to sell to the highest bidder, for ready money at public auction, after having fined the time and place of sale at their own duration and given ten days notice thereof in one or more of the newspaper printed in the town of Charlottesville and also sales feed the same, by advertisement to be set up at the previous to the day of sale, and out of the monies securing from such sale, shall, after sales figuring the charge, thereof and all other expenses attending the processes, pry to the said Flemming Broadhead, his executors administrators or assigns, the said sum of one hundred and eighty five dollars with the interest thereon, which may lawfully have accrued, and the balance of any, shall pay to the said John Sprouce, Sr. his heirs executors administrators or assigns, but if the whole of the sum of one hundred and eighty five dollars shall be lawfully paid off and discharged to the said F. Broadhead his executors administrators or assigns, or before the 1^st day of November 1841 when the last payments payable, so that no default of payment of the said sum of one hundred and eighty dollars be made there this indenture to be void or to remain in full force and virtue. In witness whereof the parties to this presents leave hereto set their hands and affined their seals the day and year first above written.
