Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Etter Funeral Home Chapel for John W. Childress who died at his home at 649 Augusta Avenue, Wednesday, following a two week illness. Mr. Childress is survived by his wife, Mrs. Evelyn Barker Childress and a son J. W. Childress, Jr.
Three sisters, Mrs. Agnes Spradlin, Arch Avenue, city; Mrs. Rebecca Sprouse, Avon Avenue, Charlottesville; and Mrs. J. B. Gibson, Alleghany Avenue, Staunton, also survive.
The body will remain at the Etter Funeral Home until hour of the funeral.

James Lewis Childress, 72, died at his home, 649 Augusta Ave., Sunday morning at 5:15 after a short illness. He is survived by one son, John D. Childress, of Waynesboro; one brother, John W. Childress, of Waynesboro; and three sisters, Mrs. R. L. Spradlin, of Waynesboro; Mrs. Ida Gibson, of Staunton; and Mrs. Rebecca Sprouse, of Charlottesville; also by a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday May 4th at 3 p.m. from the Church of the Brethren, with Rev. D. B. Garber conducting the service assisted by Rev. H. E. Truitt and Rev. C. F. Moseley. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery.
The remains will be at Etter Funeral Home until 9 o'clock Tuesday morning. The body will be taken to his home, 649 Augusta Ave. and may be viewed until the hour of service.

Mrs. Rebecca E. Sprouse
Mrs. Rebecca Ellen Childress Sprouse, 87, died Saturday in her residence at 1018 Avon Street.
A native of Augusta County, Mrs. Sprouse was the daughter of the late David Dillard and Eliza Jane Pannill Childress.
She was a member of the Blanche Marshall Sunday School Class and the Women's Society at Hinton Avenue United Methodist Church, where she had been a member for 65 years.
She is survived by her husband, James Howell Sprouse, Sr.
Other survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Harry C. Pond, Sr., Mrs. Harry J. Brown, Sr., of Charlottesville, Mrs. Lewis B. Stevens, Jr., of Norfolk, James Howell Sprouse, Jr., of Charlottesville; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Hinton Avenue United Methodist Church, the Rev. Virgil Harris officiating.
Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery.
Hill and Irving Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born in Augusta County Dec. 12, 1877, and lived in Waynesboro until 1935 when he moved to near Afton where he was proprietor of a service station on the Lynchburg road. He is survived by his widow, Yhorlia Barker Childress; three daughters, Mrs. Virginia C. Stone, Waynesboro; and Mrs. Floyd W. Gray and Mrs. Marguerite C. Brown, both of Afton; one son, Carl S. Childress of Afton; and two brothers, Patrick H. Childress, of Waynesboro and A. D. Childress, of Hagerstown, Md. Also six grandchildren, Mrs. Thomas A. Halter, Miss Alice Gray, Miss Jo Anne Gray, Donnie Gray, and Carl Allen Brown, all of Afton, and Woodrow W. Stone, of Waynesboro; and one great-grandchild, Charles Stone, of Waynesboro. Pallbearers will be Henry Pannell, Earl Barker, Solon Barker, Austin Pannell, Preston Barker and Walker Barker. Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of the Etter Funeral Home, under the direction of Rev. B. F. Robinson. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery.

DEATH OF MRS. BYRD
Mrs. Mary E. Byrd, wife of Robert Byrd, died at her home, on the Ellison Farm, Saturday last, about noon. She had been ill about a month with an affection of the heart and some other ailments. She is survived by her husband, three daughters, and two sons, also by her father, Mr. David Childress. The funeral was held at the home on Monday evening, conducted by Rev. Stanley and Rev. Lynch, and interment in Riverview.
